It has occurred to me repeatedly, that the reason some old people drive so slowly is because they’ve had a lifetime to see the stupidity of other drivers, and the sudden appearance of so many unpredictable things in front of them, like a bicycle in the road, somebody having a blowout and stopping suddenly right in front of you, being part of a dog pack pileup on the interstate, people pulling right out in front of you, motorcycles appearing out of nowhere, a metal barrel in the road as you come over a hill. No wonder old people putter. And young, urgent, 30-year-old business businessman drive like they’re just going to put push past you in the hall.
