I am not criticizing the fact that human beings tend to lift their entertainers onto their shoulders and carry them around like idols. And you’ve often heard that school teachers should be our rock stars because they do tend to function as “the hand that rocks the cradle“ for (too many) children.
Not taking away from the fact that mothers are what make the world go round, on almost every level LOL.
Which is a long way to finally getting around to saying that since so much of our health and immune system and cancer-survival come from our gastrointestinal tract it would seem that the activities, practice, and research being carried out in the discipline of Gastroenterology would be the center of the universe to us.
Someday, I believe that it will be sort of routine, that people would go into the hospital and be given a drink that sterilizes the gastrointestinal tract, and then right behind that, a slow infusion of healthy, cultivated, beneficial germs that have been researched, mapped out and grown en masse to be helpful to humans. We’ve developed for millions of years, in a relationship with germs living in our gastrointestinal tract.
Think about it, when we are born, our intestines are full of nothing but sterile, digested meconium. Almost immediately the contents of our gastrointestinal tract begin to “infect“ meaning: colonize, with germs we get directly from our mother and our environment. The ultimate “hand me down“.
They say that our gastrointestinal germs are family specific, and have descended for generations.
I wonder how much of the disease that we see, isn’t as much hereditary, as the germs that allow or prevent it, are.
