We All Agree, And So It’s a Fact.

There are lots of scary things happening on the Internet as far as the distribution of misinformation. One of the things I have very high concern is the presence of forums in which like-minded people can almost vote a fact into existence. Someone will make an erroneousĀ  comment and someone will “second it” like a motion. And then more and more people will share their experiences that agree with this “fact” And it becomes a fact with legs. And then a whole cohort of people end up believing and using this incorrect information. A good example of this is a message board where any word that ends in glycol is ethylene glycol or anti-freeze. You could say propylene glycol or any other glycol that you want which may be completely harmless and certain groups of people will always treat that like anti-freeze and go completely out of their minds until you point out a real fact to them. Fact by consensus We all agree this is a fact. And so it is
